Tempus

In addition to creating the Visual Identity for Great Domaines, we were tasked with creating a set of wine labels for their newly launched collaboration with Sadie Family Wines in the Swartland.

Concept

Great Domaines began entertaining the idea of making its own wine to give its European producers a bottle on each annual visit. With the high caliber of wine being made in South Africa, this wine was of course going to be South African and Great Domaines therefore formed a partnership with one of the country's best producers, Sadie Family Wines.

Initial Sketches and Concepts

The name "Tempus" (the Latin word for time) was chosen to honour the processes of growing vines, making wine, cellaring it and building relationships in order to share it. Each wine in the Tempus series is made as a one-off, on an annual basis and in very limited quantities.

Using this as a jumping point, we created two labels which would be used for each vintage to represent the wines being produces. White Wines would have a feminine figure with a wicker basket on her shoulder and Red Wines, a masculine figure in a straw hat with his basket resting on his hip. The shadow cast by each figure would represent the idea of time and use the figure themselves in the same way a sundial casts a shadow.
